Below please find information you may find helpful.  It is always a good idea to check for updates or changes on the official website for the location where your son or daughter is currently training.  If any information on this page is found to be incorrect, please contact us so that we can update it for future visitors.  Thanks!

Basic Training Locations

The US Army currently has four basic training locations that are active as of 2014. No matter what MOS you enlisted into the US Army as, you can expect the first 9-10 weeks of your Army careers will start in one of these four basic training locations.

One Station Unit Training Locations

With some Army Jobs (MOS), both the Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) phases of training are accomplished back to back at the same basic training location, with the same drill sergeants, as well as with the same fellow recruits. This is called One Station Unit Training, or OSUT. For example, the Infantry MOS consists of the usual Basic Training followed by five weeks of AIT, all within the same basic training location. A similar program is followed for all cavalry scouts, tank crewmen, field artillery cannon crewmen, military police, combat engineers, and chemical operations (defensive) specialists. For all other MOSs, you will be attending a separate location for your AIT.

Organization

The basic building block of all Army organizations is the individual soldier. While the structure can seem quite confusing, for purposes of basic training these are the units that make up the group your recruit is in:

Platoon - 16 to 44 soldiers.
Company - 62 to 190 soldiers. Three to five platoons form a company.
Troop - Iin the cavalry branch, a troop is the equivalent unit to the infantry company.
Battalion - 300 to 1,000 soldiers. Four to six companies make up a battalion.
Squadron - An armored cavalry, air cavalry, and/or other reconnaissance unit whose organizational role parallels that of a battalion.
Regiment - Most battalions that are part of brigades have a regimental affiliation, such as 1/34 IN Rgt. (1st Battalion of the 34th Infantry Regiment).
Brigade - 3,000 to 5,000 solders.

Basic Training Letters

Soldiers in Basic Combat Training will have mail call every day that the US Postal Service delivers mail. We encourage you to send uplifting cards and letters to Soldiers in training.

Patiently wait for a message

The first thing you should know is that once someone leaves for basic training, they do not actually begin training until about a week or two later. This is because they first go to what’s call Basic Training Reception. Here they will get in-processed and sent to their BCT unit. During this time, some soldiers get a chance to call, and even write their families a letter. However, since they are not yet in their basic training unit, they cannot give you a return address. Usually, you should give it about a month after they leave for BCT to begin expecting a letter. After that, letters should be received more frequently.

You’ve received basic training letters in the mail!

Once you receive your first basic training letter, you should now have your soldier’s unit address. It will look something like this:

The RED text is what MUST BE INCLUDED in order for it to arrive to your soldier. However, including all of the elements of the address (including the black) will ensure the fastest delivery to your soldier.

How to write a letter to your soldier

Now, to reply, you simply write back to them at that exact address given. There’s nothing fancy to it, it’s just a simple letter!

What can I not send to my soldier?

Soldiers are not allowed to receive any packages containing food, candy, pornographic material or any other contraband. Near the end of basic training, drill sergeants may be more inclined to allow soldiers to receive food, but you should wait until you receive confirmation on this from your soldier.

FT BENNING, GA INFO:

Getting to Fort Benning, Georgia

Fort Benning is just south of Columbus, GA.  However, it's almost double in airfare to fly into Columbus (CSG, a metropolitan airport) versus flying into Atlanta, GA (ATL).  Atlanta, Georgia is about 90 minutes from the base.  If you need an address for the base to put into your GPS use THE NATIONAL INFANTRY MUSEUM, 1775 Legacy Way, Columbus, GA 31903.

Graduation Dates

Graduation Dates and Times are listed on the official Fort Benning website.

The hotels listed below are all members of the Columbus GA Chamber of Commerce. We do not have first-hand knowledge on all of these hotels but we want to know what you think. Please contact us if you have a good or bad experience at any of these facilities so we can pass the word to future families!

Remember: It is almost never a good idea to pay for a hotel room in advance. There is a reason why hotels ask you for your money before you get there. In addition, your recruit could get set back in training and you may have to reschedule your stay.

FT JACKSON, SC INFO:

Getting to Fort Jackson, South Carolina

Fort Jackson is just south of Columbia, SC.  Airfares seem to be very reasonable for flying into a metropolitan airport (CAE).  If you have a problem getting a flight into Columbia, SC, you could also fly into Charleston, SC (CHS) or Charlotte, NC (CLT), which are international airports but both about 90-95 miles away.  If you need an address for the base to put into your GPS use 5450 Strom Thurmond Blvd, Columbia, SC 29207.  Once you arrive at the gate (Gates 1, 2 or 4) you can follow the blue lines to Hilton Field where you need to be for Family Day and Graduation.

Graduation Dates and Times are listed on the official Fort Jackson website.

The listed hotels are all members of the Lawton OK Chamber of Commerce.
